That is, Crino Cycles turns one-year old this week, but also cyclically speaking, it ‘turns one’ — like sprockets, wheels, gears, chains.
Anyhoo, there will be no bike puns riding through the drafting of his post, thanks very much! Nor will there be any alluding to the tightest cut of lycra going to the rider with the most balls guts. I aim to keep this piece on the road, steer clear of the pack and take you on a Tour de History of Crino Cycles.
This time last year, Crino Cycles was wearing training wheels. In the previous twelve months, it has established itself as leader of the Nicholson Street peloton, no longer domestiques in the race of Bike Shop superiority. Crino is creating a slipstream of professionalism in Carlton North, so much so, I really need to place them on this pedal-stool.
Crino was set up by a hard-working, knowledgeable and friendly team. Tony and John not only provide cutomized service to the biking enthusiasts of Melbourne, but also allow the cycling newbie to feel comfortable. The wannabe Lance Armstrong can venture into Crino, look about bewildered and not know his/her road bike from a bit of lycra fluff. Tony or John will point out the difference within the fast blink of an eye.
This is no threatening, condescending environment! There is no mass-produced, iffy, plastic gear to be seen, and the service is second to none. (There’s great coffee, cakes, retro clothes, parking along the same strip).
Congratulations to the entire team at Crino Cycles. You’ve had a great year on the road, now we stand in tandem to welcome you into the criterium
Five Fast Facts About Crino:
1. Location is 725 Nicholson St, Carlton North.
2. Co-owner, John, thinks it would be great to follow the Giro d’Italia one day. When I expressed my enthusiasm for the entire family to go to Italy and eat (while the race was in progress) John mentioned that this was unnecessary, given the excitement and importance of the race! Yep, we are on totally different wavelengths re Italy.
3. Crino Cycles is the proud owner of a 1970s Volvo station wagon, spray painted orange. It has been known to breakdown, unlike the bikes.
4. Co-owner and wife of John (Allison) does not ride a bike. Allison was given a two-wheeler bike to celebrate her love match with John. It was Christmas Day and he yearned for her to ride it, to enjoy long, leisurely, loving rides together. She fell straight off, injured herself, blood & gore, has the scars. Never riding again.
5. Crino Cycles celebrates cycling as an artform. (I made that up, but I can tell that they do!)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I walked past this very establishment today. This morning, after discovering I'd run out of conditioner, I found a stockist of MooGoo just a few doors up from Crino Cycles. My heart missed a beat at the sight of the old Volvo (impossible to miss) -- there's nothing subtle about a 70s orange duco. After purchasing the conditioner, and spending time and money at The Little Bookroom, Luce and I headed to Nicholson Bakers for refreshments. Two coffees later (unheard of for me) and a sourdough with walnuts tucked under my arm, we again strolled past Crino. It looks clean, fresh and well ordered. It will be my bike shop of choice whenever I need anything bicycle related (and apparently the service is fab!).
Happy birthday Crino!
Happy first, Crino Cycles, but ohnoes about #4! o_O
That sounds like a lovely morning, madam Squirbaby. Its a nice part of N. street, isn't it? I hope you saw the second hand clothes shoppe!?
Hope the weekend is progressing well, my love. See you for a Sydney Rd extravaganza soon xxxx
Let me know if you need a bike shipped over, hon *g*. I know about number 4. I think Alli was secretly pleased about not riding again, tho. NOT a bike rider. xx
Thanks Rosie for posting, and Squirtbaby and Laura for your kind wishes. I'd like to add that the fall occurred on a particularly rough piece of driveway! LOL.
Welcome, lady of the Crino. Such a fast, vigourous and outdoorsy rep of cycling you are, too! I'm sorry to 'out' you as a bike-riding doofas. You'll always be my favourite non-riding, non-helmeted, non-cycling part owner of a bike shop.
Happy 1st, lovely.
