The Blues

Gifted and Talented

When chatting to particularly spiritual people, they often remind us that we need to use the talents we have, that these things are gifts and to NOT develop them is lax.

Recently, I’ve been spouting out about Adele to people that might listen (um, one person?).  Sometimes, I get obsessed with music and it doesn’t really matter what style it is, although I’m much less educated about country stuff.  I’d love to learn, just don’t seem to have the opportunity.

Without talking too much about myself (er, yes, I have a blog devoted ENTIRELY to me) but still … LOL. Over the long, long years, I’ve been fortunate enough to see INXS in a pub setting where I was close enough to Michael H that I could have touched his leather.  Have seen Dionne Warwick in a cabaret setting where she sang a medley of her hits without music.  Was jammed against the stage at a Eurythmics concert and saw Annie Lennox sing ‘Here Comes the Rain Again’ in a bra (is that right, Al?).  Or perhaps that was my bra?

Have sat in an auditorium when Wendy Matthews sang ‘The Day you Went Away’ without music and she teared up. So did everyone else.  Saw Bowie and his glass spider, Jagger and his older boys, Fleetwood Mac when Stevie had her nose, and Lindsay played guitar (oh. MY), Anthony Warlow and Marina belting out ‘Phantom of the Op-er-a’.  And then Madons.  Always. I think the arrival of Ms Ciccone into my adolescence started my fascination and understanding of pop culture.

Throughout this life of music obsession, I can say that my very favourite shows have been in quiet venues with the artist and musician and a few (hundred) people, like Neil Finn (deliriously talented muso)  Mossy (Jeez, Mossy), The VanAm (great Aussie rock chick).  It’s helped me comprehend the difference between talented and the truly gifted.  Popular, compared to the naturally-able, mega-amazing-move-your-soul-with-their-gift type o’ folks.

It doesn’t mean that popular CAN’T equate with the truly gifted. I think sometimes we believe that popular means CRAP.  That the truly gifted are hermit-like souls that sing for pittance and never get recognized.  Or, alternatively, only the confused and edgy are talented and they’ll never reach the financial ranks of Keisha, Rhianna, Katy, Britters, Kylie, The Beebs.

It’s not always the way.

Adele is phenomenally gifted.  I don’t know if she’ll ever be hugely popular, don’t really care, but her voice is stunning.  Her songs are powerful, but they make me feel like writing sad stuff and rolling in a ball in the corner of kitchen while eating chocolate-covered pumpkin seeds!  Damn you, Adele!  I’m supposed to be writing something humourous.

Anyone who covers a 1980s ‘The Cure’ song is top of the bleeding pops as far as I’m concerned.

Thanks Adele, for reminding me that there are people with talent, then there is the higher echelon of the god-given gifted.  And that’s how it is.

so I won’t let you … close enough to hurt me

Yep, Annie did strip down to her bra at one stage… you only wanted to ;)   I still remember how sweaty we were after that concert!  And the horror I felt when I saw my spiky hair had gone flat from the heat, LOL.  Best concert ever!!!

Adele’s voice has nothing on you, young woman!  She might want to do a duet, Lol

There’s never pirating of music, Gay  *shocked face*  Remember my T-Shirt slogan:  ’home taping is ruining the music industry’?

Didn’t the blue black dye hit the purple wallpaper and wreck it?  Pity.  Hope you’re well and warm xx

I’m going to love Adele forever!  And I saw Annie perform in her bra too -- it was a phase she was going through, but soooo daring!

Hi darls. How’s your home this arvo?  I’d call, but we have a musical recital (like Adele) to prepare for, lol.  That clip of her on the Graham Norton show is so funny. She’s hilarious, LOVE the story of the hula-hooping poncho thing.

Are you going to love Adele forevs?  Jeez.  That’s a HUGE statement.  And Annie and her bra?  I wanted a red one -- and a bra too -- but I think it was just a fad, yeah.

      Big kisses, and such x

Ohhh you’ve struck a nerve as I have just “discovered” this woman and am teaching the girls to belt out her songs!  To discover however she was born in 1988 was quite disturbing as I’m still of the opinion anyone born post 1980 cannot be doing much with their life as they must be too young.  Sigh.  Unfortunately I have to retrain my way of thinking as I realise I am becoming on the older side of things.  But I digress!  She is a beautiful song writer and singer.  They come along so rarely. x

Howdie Kate!  So glad to read about you teaching your little people to belt out Adele!  She’s certainly a talented role model and it’s lovely to let them listen to an artist who uses her voice as an instrument.  As you say, they come along so rarely in the pop music world.

LOL @ the post 1980 child. Yeah, they still must be all of about 5 YO?  Surely?  Nope.  Time is so fleeting, isn’t it?

I hope you and the fam are well and work is okay.  Thanks for the visit here and glad that you’re still listening to the good stuff.
