There was once a funny fangirl who didn’t know what the hell she wanted.
Was it dazzling-looking people parading around the small-screen scantily clad and mumbling well-written lines involving the expression dude? Was it meaningful, character-driven stories with racy dialogue and even racier nudity? Was it life as a rock chick? Was it a television show with all the warnings, ranging from drug use and disgusting language all the way to the most explicit sex scene EVA is here?
Did she still have yearnings to be a rock chick even though her hearing and eyesight rendered her unable to even mount a stage?
Was she still obsessed with music and gigs at a time when she should be concerned about the next phase of her life and getting up out of chair after a very strong nightcap?
Is she finally coming to the realization that the best nights in comprise a blanket – replaced by a cool pack during the Australian summer – a much loved couch, a glass of red wine, some old vinyl records from the days of scratch and spin, and a BOX SET.
If you answered yes to many of the above questions, you have won a date with destiny. I can show you the best time, as long as you become addicted to the box set of television currently being shown in the lounge-room and you sit quietly for the duration of the program. It’s Box Sets or nothing now because the year I turned forty, I made a decree:
Life is too short to watch rubbish on television and if I wanted to view a reality show, I would sit in our (almost completed) treehouse, binoculars in hand and observe the neighbours in their own games of ‘Survivor’, ‘Master Chef’ or ‘Australia’s Top Model.’
This tiny piece of cyber-space is going to be dedicated to discussing the glory of watching a television series as a complete season rather than doing time on Australian Free to Air – where you can view a pilot one night at 8.30, only to end up watching episode 20 of the same season the very next week, followed by a repeat of the pilot the week after…
then the show is often axed!
It’s also a place where I will voice opinion about the music I love the most – an eclectic assortment of chat about particular songs, groups, eras, concerts, loves hates and other oddities. I suppose this is a spot where I will come to talk to myself about my greatest loves – apart from family, friends and writing: BOX SETS, MUSIC, and listening to the sound of my own voice.
Fangirl sings the blues – or, if you don’t like the idea of listening to the tune – this fangirl can give you the blues. Life’s too short to watch crap
